The Steps Taken in the Stucco Repair
Take any loose stucco off the wall
Remove the loose stucco carefully, ensuring you don't damage the underlying timber lath foundation. Use a cold chisel and hammer, or just the hammer alone, for this task. Remember to wear eye protection. Continue removing the stucco until you reach the areas where it is securely attached to the lath. Then, use cutters to remove any exposed metal mesh.
Cover the lath that is now exposed
Cut a sheet of grade-D builder's paper with a utility knife to fit snugly around the area where the old stucco meets the exposed wood lath. Secure the paper to the lath with roofing nails, then place a second sheet of paper on top. Lay the galvanized metal mesh over the paper and trim it closely to the stucco's edge, using cutters with offset handles for ease.
Mix and add the stucco to the wall
Prepare your first batch of stucco in a wheelbarrow, following the recipe provided for the initial coat. Incorporate the acrylic adhesive to enhance the bond between the new and old stucco layers. Once mixed, dampen the edge of the existing stucco to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the new patch, which could weaken the bond. Using a brick trowel, scoop up baseball-sized portions of the damp stucco and apply them to the wire lath until it is completely covered.
Second coat of stucco
After waiting seven days, remove the plastic sheet and lightly spray the area with water. Prepare the second coat by mixing a new batch of stucco using the given recipe. Starting from the bottom and working upwards, apply a 3/8-inch coat. Use a brick trowel to pack down the seams. Once the wet shine fades, smooth the stucco with your trowel until it is just below the existing stucco line. Cover the area with a plastic sheet again.
Home Exterior Stucco Patching & Painting
Stucco is a popular choice among homeowners in Albuquerque and beyond due to its durability in harsh weather conditions. Over time, however, exposure to the elements can cause your stucco to lose its vibrancy. Fortunately, Mike’s Quality Painting offers expert patching and painting services to rejuvenate your stucco and restore its original beauty.
